League
Week 17
1st
XI bowl out L&B early but dont score enough..
No 2nds Game
After
finally losing a toss, Marden were put into the field
by the unbeaten Leeds & Broomfield side (although
we would have chposen to field even if we'd won!), on
what was a fairly dry wicket. The Marden attack opened
with Arun and Sam Courtley, with both applying good pressure
in the first few overs. The first wicket came in the 4th,
Arun sending down a beautifully flighted inswinging delivery
to their ex-England man McCague, beating him all ends
up, hitting middle and off. The first bowling changes
bought with it two quick wickets, Blythin getting 2 in
his first over and Ben Tomkinson taking 3 for 35 in his
8 overs, including 2 catches from the returning Hunter,
one of which was certainly a collector's item diving low
to his left at slip. Whilst the wickets were falling steadily,
we were unable to remove their number 3 Davis, who continued
to bat extremely well claiming a quick fire 50 and never
really giving a sniff of a chance. Mattison provided his
usual control and trapped the dangerous Geoff Hunt LBW
when going for his trademark woosh, and was supported
well at the end by Dai who claimed a wicket of his own,
bowling Geoff's brother for 1. Steve finishing with 12
overs, 2 for 36 and Dai 6 overs 17 for 1 - Davis finally
succumbing for 95 on the final ball going for a kamikazee
second run. Leeds & Broomfield all out 167 - the only
time they have been bowled out this season!
The Marden
reply got off to a rapid start, Burdge and Hunter taking
a liking to the pace of the L&B openers early on.
Hunter in particular took pleasure in showing us what
we have been missing, creaming Dibben through the covers
much to his displeasure and our glee. Burdge soon went
however, finding one delivery just climbing on him a
little, before Hunter was bowled by Dibben for an entertaining
19. As the openers got into their stride, they soon
capitalised on the wicket, peppering the batsmen with
short deliveries, claiming the wickets of Sunnucks and
Humphrey in quick succession. Tomkinson and Courtley
started where they finished off the previous wicket
offering good resistance to the pace and bounce, with
Ben amassing an impressive 22, joined later by Dai who
also made a useful 21 before being bowled by the returning
Dibben. George Thomas, making his debut for the ones,
impressed with a fine 6 and 4 in one over, but the tail
did not unfortunately wag enough, Marden all out for
110, L&B won by 57 runs.
A very good performance given the quality of the opposition
and we can definitely be proud to have given them a
testing game. Particular mention for Paul 'Knotty' Sunnucks
who gave an extremely competent display of wicket keeping,
with no byes!

Notices:
1. We're now nearing the end of the season, which despite
a less than perfect start has been turned around by
a string of good team performances - what better way
to celebrate than by putting some money behind the bar
after the last game on 5th September. It would be good
to see as many players, family and friends from both
teams as possible up the club to drink to a hard fought
season and make a night of it.
2. The following week, Saturday 12th September, sees
the inaugural Cricket vs Hockey cricket match - this
will be part of a club day which should be supported
by all. Please contact Paul Sunnucks asap to confirm
if you can play.
3. The League dinner will be held on Friday 9th October
2009 at the Weald of Kent Golf Club - tickets £30
for usual 3 course meal, speaker and presentations.
As defending Spirit of Cricket winners, it would be
good to get a good attendance again this year - please
let Matt Blythin know asap if you would like to attend.
4. Club photos are now being posted online by Gareth
- please go to www.flickr.com/photos/mardencc to take
a look!
If
you are not available please contact either myself
Chris Watts or Matt
Blythin ASAP so we can settle the lines up’s
as early as possible and fill anybody who drop’s
out.
Regards
Chris
