First Club Double of the Season

1st XI Clout Cobham at home
2nd XI Score away at Horton Kirby

After being put in on what looked like a fairly green wicket, the Marden innings got off to a stuttering start with Burdge falling in the third over (after the most bizarre 4 over throws i've ever seen), followed soon by B Bardsley who was unlucky against one that stayed low, playing on after looking once again in fine touch. P Sunnucks came to the crease and once again produced a steady innings. amassing 70 before being caught going for a big shot late on. Good support all through ensured Marden finished 169 for 9 from the 45, which was at least something to bowl at.

The Cobham reply didn't get given a chance to get going, with accurate and pacey bowling from the off. Wickets all round for each bowler, with Courtley's pace proving too much for the visitors, claiming 5 for 26 off 10. At 50 odd for 7, a very early finish seemed to be on the cards, but a rear guard fight back gave a temporary scare, before Mattison finally claimed the final wicket (despite the umpire's best efforts not to give it!), Cobham finishing 107 all out.

A fantastic team performance, and great win.

Winning the toss yet again the skipper elected to bat. Harry joined the captain in opening the innings and the pair put on 50. Harry was caught soon after the 50 partnership for 16 and the long awaited return of Martin came to an end. Martin soon found his form and was cutting and pulling as if he had never been away. The skipper was next out for 28 LBW. Adam joined Martin at the crease and the pair soon moved the scoring along and put on over 100 together. One audacious flick off his legs going for six over longest part of the boundary and giving Harry a scare as a tree saved his car from a dent. Martin perished after reaching 100 another well crafted century in the 2’s this season. Adam followed soon after trying to push home our advantage for a very fine 59. The skipper promoted Gareth up the order for some long handle only for him to miss a straight one 1st ball. Tony blasted 10 from the last 2 balls to take our total to 248 and another maximum 5 batting points.

George and Tony opened the bowling and George soon had one of the opening pair caught by James at mid on with a trade mark full toss. Tony started tightly ending without a wicket from his 8 overs. George removed the Horton Kirby skipper and gave us a real opening in to their batting. Jon Jones and Gareth replaced the opening pair and were soon among the wickets. Jon bowling 8 overs, 3 for 17 another display of a tight line and length reaping rewards for the bowler. Gareth ended up with 4 for 33 from 8 overs, including bowling one round his legs and one peach of a delivery through the gate of the batsman with the one that went the other way. The full toss trick also worked for Gareth as Jon took a great catch at fine leg as it seemed as if the ball was going to just evade him. Harry also made good ground the hold one for Gareth at mid wicket (travelling at mach 2 to get there). James and Will Fraser finished off the innings. James bowled 8 overs for 13 runs as the Horton Kirby batsman shut up shop waiting for the rain and Will bowling 6 overs for 10. Another great team performance and 29 points in the bag.

I’m off on my holidays this week so Jon Jones has kindly offered to skipper the side in my absence. There is no 2nd team game next week. Next fixture for the 2’s will be on the 1st August .
