League
Week 12
1st XI win at Selstead
2nd XI fall to Leeds & Broomfield at home
After winning
the toss, the skipper decided to bat first, not really
knowing how the slightly soggy wicket would react. A
shaky start saw B Bardsley, P Sunnucks and M Taplin
all go early on, hitting through the shot early on the
slow wicket. However a fine partnership of 68 between
Burdge (60) and Bardsley Snr (42) built a solid foundation
on which to finish with a flurry. Good hitting and running
late on from Thomas and the Tomkinson brothers guided
us to 204, a very respectable score given the wicket
and conditions.
As with the previous week, Courtley and B Tomkinson
got Marden off to a great start in the field, each taking
a wicket early on caught and bowled. However, Selsted's
nos. 1 and 4 soon began to build a partnership until
both were bowled by Blythin, with Mattison producing
a fine spell at the other end, finishing with a well
deserved 4 for 43. Selsted's only remaining resistance
came in the form of their leg-side slogger, although
he was soon removed by Courtley on his second spell,
taking three wickets in all, Mattison taking the final
wicket to get them out for 134, Marden winning by 70
runs.
Quote of the day, with reference to Taplin's dolly drop:
"there's no chance of him catching swine flu!"
(welcome back Martin!)
A great performance
and great win - time to make it 3 out of 3 at Milstead
and continue the climb up the table.
(p.s. To make us feel better - it is worth noting that
our result against Leeds & Broomfield wasn't quite
as bad as it seems - they managed to get Staplehurst
all out for 26 in 10 overs and took just 3 overs to
get them for no wicket!!!!)
