League Week 8

1st XI still looking to string the positives results together
2nds XI battle valiantly despite injuries

Another saturday to forget for the ones - opting to bat first on what looked like and proved to be a good wicket, the innings got off to a positive start against a very good bowling attack and very strong opposing team. After a couple of flowing fours however, Bardsley fell to start what was a steady batting collapse. Despite an extremely positive and classy 44 from Nick Burdge, the innings never really got going - Marden all out 96.

Despite some superb bowling from Tomkinson - mixing pace with control and swing, Leeds managed to reach their target within 15 overs for the loss of 2 wickets, both deservedly taken by Ben including a memorable M McCague, Ct Karim in the slips.

Good effort by all despite the result, but once again not helped by selection problems and availability - special thanks to Nick for taking the gloves. Looking forward to welcoming back the influx of absentees and injured for next week(!) - a must-win game at home against Lenham - I propose mid-season drinks at the club afterwards for those in either team who are available and fancy a beer or two to either numb the pain or celebrate in style depending how we all get on - either way we will have earnt it!!

Reminder from the Membership Secretary - please remember to pay your subs for 2009 which are now due - cheques (payable to MCHC) or cash to the captains or Dai accepted.

Winning the toss for the 2nd week in a row the captain elected to bat. After losing Rupert 1, Tony 7, and James Gowen-Smith 4, cheaply the Captain and Richard Thomas set about trying to up the rate and stem the flow of wickets. They both started to find the boundry before the skipper departed for 29. Gareth joined the vice captain and blasted a quick fire 24. A brave 25 from John Murray delivered on one leg and young Dan chipping in with a few helped Richard get to a very important 52. Simon used up the overs and gave good support to John as he peppered the boundary, reaching a creditable 166 off 45 overs.

Despite losing John before he bowled a ball and George Thomas, with the family back strain, after only bowling 5 overs all the others bowled well with Tony picking up 3 wickets conceding only 25 from 12 overs with 8 maidens a sterling effort. James picked up one, as did Gareth and Pete picked up 3. Young Dan Ashton capped a good day with 5 overs for 24 and was unlucky not to pick up at least one wicket. Despite a fighting effort we were unable to pick up the last 2 wickets.

2nd Team to Face Linton Park 1.30pm away.
