Marden U9's compete in KCB U9's Super Mini 8's County Knockout July 6th

Marden U9's finished runners up in the KCB U9's super mini 8's county knockout on Sunday at Gore Court C.C. Having qualified earlier in the season the team of Wilf Andrews (c) , Jack Sunnucks (w/k) , Alex MacKinnon , Alex Moen , Freddie Betts, Henry Taggart , Elliot Aitken and Daniel Edwards, were drawn in a group with Broadstairs and Old Colfeians.

Having won the toss against Broadstairs and electing to bat first Marden scored 245-0 off their 8 (4 ball) overs (starting at 200 with minus 5 runs for any wicket) . Marden then bowled and fielded well to restrict Broadstairs to 183-6 . Next up were Old Colfeians , once again winning the toss and batting first Marden made 241-1 and then kept
Old Colfeians to 219-1 with accurate bowling and impressive fielding.

The next stage took all the group winners from the 8 initial groups (minus the 2 with the least runs scored ) and split the remaining 6 into 2 groups of 3 . Marden were seeded no 1 for this stage and were paired up with Sevenoaks Vine and Leeds and Broomfield . Playing Sevenoaks Vine first Marden lost the toss and were put in , having wobbled early on (200-2 after 4 overs ) Elliot Aitken, Alex Moen, Dan Edwards and Wilf Andrews , smashed the last 4 overs all round Sittingbourne to end the
innings at 234-2. Mardens bowlers again bowled tightly and fielded well
and Sevenoaks ended on 215-3.

Now Leeds and Broomfield stood in the way of Marden reaching the final. Having played Leeds twice in the earlier stages of the competition , winning one and losing one it was all to play for. Marden lost the toss and again were put in. A steady start was
then accelerated in the middle of the innings with a 4 ( and nearly lost ball from Alex Mackinnon ) and three 4's on the trot by Elliot Aitken.

With Marden at 236-0 with 2 balls remaining things were looking good but then Daniel Edwards was cleaned up by a Monty McCague (son of Martin) yorker which left Marden on 232-1. Again Marden bowled and fielded extremely well including a sharp bit of wicket keeping by Jack Sunnucks to run out one of the Leeds batsmen. Leeds ended on 219-2 and so into the final it was against Tunbridge Wells.

Nerves were starting to play a part now and with Tunbridge Wells winning the toss and electing to bat this proved to be a big factor in the result as Marden had not chased a score all day. After a poor start 9 runs off the first over Marden bowlers got on top and bowled their next 4 overs conceeding just 10 more runs. Tunbridge Wells reached 233-0 with 1 ball to go and Henry Taggart hit the top of middle stump with a gem of
a delivery to leave Tunbridge Wells on 228-1 off their 8 overs. Marden now confident of reaching the total as they had scored 232 or more in all their games so far set out to chase down the score.

Tunbrdge Wells bowled well and fielded extremely well. With an early wicket falling
Marden started to get behind the clock and when a mix up resulted in a run out Marden were left on 203-2 off 5 overs . A wicket in each of the last 3 overs all from good catches as the batsmen tried to hit out left the run chase in tatters at 198-5.

Marden therefore finish runners up which is a great credit to a small village team. The team although disappointed at losing in the final can hold their heads high and be proud of their achievement. I would like to say a big thank you to all the parents and helpers for their support on what was a long day and a special word of thanks to Tom
Aitken and William Cammegh who came along as reserves but unfortunately
didn't get a game.

CRICKET RESULTS – 12th JULY 2008 – LEAGUE WEEK 11

LEAKY LEEDS “CASTLED” BY BOTH MARDEN TEAMS

TONY SETS UP HOME WIN IN TOP OF TABLE CLASH

HUMPHREY (R) AND TOMKINSON IN RECORD STAND AS SECOND TEAM SCORE 325

First XI v's Leeds & Broomfield Home - Won by 43 Runs - Updated version with batting data included..

We lost the toss on a wicket that had been given a soaking during the week so I guess we knew what to expect. We were asked to bat and a fine opening stand of 48 with Richard Brewer returning from injury, and Tony Sunnucks set us up well. Paul joined his brother and looked in good nick before uncharacteristically missing a straight one for 25. Tony battled on with different supporters for a fine 84. Marden set 180, I would have been happier with 200 but with the low slow track we knew tight bowling would make that total difficult to achieve

Matt Blythin opened the wicket taking by bowling the L & B skipper for 7. He was supported well by Nav Athwell (SAT NAV to his friends) at the other end who bowled 6 overs 1 maiden 0 for 17, and with a little more luck would have taken 2 wickets. Tony Mortimer replaced Nav and immediately began asking questions of the L & B batsmen. His tight line frustrated them bowling his first 4 overs for 3 runs. Mattison joined the attack and huge pressure began to build. Mattison took 2 wickets, Hartshorn bowled and Bailey the other opener caught at deep mid wicket by Dai Thomas, very secure under the high ball. A spectacular palmed catch from Mortimer to Blythin secured just reward for Mortimer’s bowling. Langridge pre-empted Creasey’s bizarre attempt to emulate our test players and caught him off a poorly executed reverse sweep, off Tony Sunnucks, much to the annoyance of his batting partner Dibben. Dibben still fighting hard for the L & B cause was removed by a sharp catch in the deep by the skipper, off Mattison for 28. Tony Sunnucks chipped in with a further 2 wickets, a fine catch by Paul at long on and a regulation one by Brewer in the covers extinguished the L & B fire. 3 overs to go the hatches battened, they effectively gave up 8 wickets down. Fine fielding and great catching saw us run out easy winners in the end by 43 runs. Mortimer 1 for 18 off 8 was superb, Mattison 3 for 21 off 12 Sunnucks T 3 for 37 off 8 and Brewer 0 for 11 off 4 all performed brilliantly.

Leeds & Broomfield V's Marden Second XI - Marden win by 212 Runs

Leeds is normally a good place to win the toss and although the final score vindicated the decision, to bat first at 80 for 3 off 20 overs, with a surprising amount of bounce in the wicket the game could had gone either way. Chris (7) and JJ (31) got off to a solid start until Chris dragged a ball onto his stumps. JJ was in top form cutting beautifully in front and behind of square and clipping off his toes over mid wicket.

He and Rupert put on 50 until John Fletcher the Leeds Skipper bought himself on and immediately tempted JJ and Chris McCafferty into false shots resulting in catches on the off side.

This bought Ben Tomkinson to the wicket on his birthday, conscious that there was not a great deal of batting to follow. By the time Rupert (Do you have big jugs!!) had been run out in the 42nd over he had a magnificent 158 runs to his name and he and Ben had put together what surely is a Marden record for the 4th wicket of 223 runs. Both players were ruthless on the flagging Leeds bowlers but commendably the home side continued to field with a lot of guts, particularly in the deep, and they were ultimately rewarded with the Humphries runout.

Ben reached his 100 on the penultimate ball of the innings, with young and confident Alex Newport and Charlie Humphrey both joining him in the closing stages, Charlie hitting his first runs for Marden.

Leeds responded with an opening stand of 55 against the bowling of Dan Wickham and Peter Lampard. Dan looks a fine prospect for the club and will not have thanked his skipper who asked him to open the bowling!! His fielding was superb with a great arm.

Lampard eventually forced Linsey Hancox into a mis-timed pull held safely by young Charlie Humphrey at mid on, and after that the resistance was limited only to the skipper John Fletcher who cracked a quick 29 but became the first of Alex Newport's victims, clean bowled in a first class spell of 4 overs, 2 maidens, 3 wickets for 3 runs! Poor Leeds continued to suffer as most of the aerial shots were pouched by Ward, Thomas and Wickham and the innings would have ended sooner if Chris had clung onto a couple of sharp chances at silly mid on.

This Saturday we have a home game against Hollingbourne and then a week off!
