RESULTS – 14th JUNE 2008 – LEAGUE WEEK 7
1st XI SNATCH DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY &
SECONDS COME TO GRIEF ON THE GREEN
1st XI V’s Horton Kirby - Lost
by 20 Runs
We won the toss on a dampish track and elected to field.
Samuel and Brewer opened the bowling and Arun struck
early to remove one of the openers bats 3 & 4 followed
quickly so a good decision to field? Well that’s
what we thought! With a small rally in the Kirby middle
order and a fine 64 by Evans the other opener Kirby
posted 165 all out. Samuel 12 overs 3 for 36, Brewer
10 overs 2 for 35 and Sunnucks 4 for 26 off 12, Toby
Withers Green taking a hat trick of catches.
Our reply
started well Sunnucks T making 31, Sunnucks P making
50 but at 132 for 3!! The wheels fell off big time………….
Our lower middle order failed to respond to the pressure
and with tight bowling and fielding by Kirby fell woefully
short of the total.
How does the saying go……………………..Defeat
clutched from the jaws of victory!! However a very good
and competitive game of cricket.
At home on
Saturday v’s Milstead to make amends!!

2nd XI V’s Marden 2nd XI - Lost
by 8 Wickets
We fielded a useful slide on paper and were not too
concerned at being inserted on what looked a good batting
track. Chris and Tony started sedately against the seam
attack of Redman and Dawson and didn’t look in
real trouble until Tony was bowled by a Yorker from
Dawson. Chris (22) was bowled by Redman who by now was
generating a fair bit of pace down the hill.
The batting
after that was stop start with Rupert and Sam both hitting
some nice boundaries until Rupert (14) smeared one into
the covers from off veteran spinner Robin Cross. Sam
looked in particularly good nick but pulled a ham string
and had to temporarily retire hurt. Nick then got a
ball in the face and chopped the next one onto his stumps
off the young spinner. Charlie (38) and the skipper
(27) consolidated with a stand of 50 and were beginning
to dominate the spinners more and more until Thomas
pulled one round the corner into the hands of square
leg for a soft dismissal. Dai and Nav didn’t last
long and it was left to Gareth (19) with some lusty
blows at the end and the re-emergence of Sam (37 not
out) to push the score to a half respectable 179 for
the loss of 9 wickets.
Matters could
have been much worse, if Bearsted hadn’t dropped
several catches all over the field but there was a feeling
that if we bowled straight and held our chances we could
end up with a result.
Unfortunately
this was not to be as Nav struggled early on with his
run up and Dai simply couldn’t get any luck with
both openers playing attacking shots and elluding the
fielders when the ball went in the air.
Tony came
on to snaffle two quick wickets including the dangerous
Chris Filmer first ball but opener Mick Clifton continued
serenely on his way ending on 126 not out – out
of a total of 181. The game was won with 9 over’s
to spare and now Marden travel to Mersham urgently seeking
a win to get their season back on track.
